A law degree will remain relevant because legal work involves much more than drafting documents. AI can help with research, first drafts and routine documentation, but human judgement cannot simply be automated. Lawyers have to understand a client’s circumstances, assess competing interests, interpret facts, make strategic decisions, negotiate, communicate difficult advice and take responsibility for the outcome. Courtroom advocacy, negotiation and many aspects of client counselling also depend on context, judgement and trust. The future lawyer is therefore unlikely to be someone who simply writes everything manually, but someone who knows when to use AI, when to question it and when human judgement must take over.
