Sustainability Through the Lens: National Photo Essay Competition

Overview

The Sustainability Through the Lens competition, organised by the College Access Program, invites students aged 15-19 from around the world to use photography or AI art to explore the urgent, layered question of sustainability and how it touches our lives, our communities, and our dreams for the future.

This is more than a contest. It’s a call to look at the world differently, to notice what often goes unseen, and to imagine what a more sustainable future might look like- through your own lens.

Who Can Participate

Individuals aged 15-19 (as of December 2025)

You may participate individually or in a team of two (only for AI category)

Each student may submit:

  • One Real Image entry (individual only)
  • One AI-Generated Image entry (individual or duo)

Categories & Themes

Category 1: Real Images (Photo-Essay of 3-5 Images)

Theme: The Things We Inherit

SDG Focus Areas:

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production

SDG 13: Climate Action

We inherit more than DNA. We inherit rivers and rituals. Land and loss. Damaged soil and enduring wisdom. Use your lens to capture the visible (and invisible) legacies passed down through families, communities, or ecosystems.

What are we handed? What are we handing on?

Examples:

  • Fading water traditions in your region
  • A forest cleared, and what remains
  • Grandparents’ sustainable practices revived or lost
  • Urban overgrowth reclaiming space

Category 2: AI-Generated Image (Photo-Essay of 3-5 Images)

Theme: Careers Reimagined

SDG Focus Areas:

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure

The future of work must heal, not harm. In a climate-conscious world, what will careers look like? Use AI to imagine jobs that are regenerative, inclusive, and futuristic.

Examples (Your imagination is the limit):

  • Urban soil engineers for Mars farming!
  • Climate trauma counselors for post-disaster zones
  • Ocean plastic data miners
  • Fashion designers using algae-based dye
