Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) replaces the traditional 2-year B.Ed. pathway and integrates subject knowledge and professional training into a unified, multidisciplinary framework that prepares future educators for diverse school contexts.
Introduction
On 4 March 2023, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) formally launched the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) in 57 Teacher Education Institutions across India from the academic session 2023-24. This flagship initiative is part of the transformative educational reforms introduced by the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) to strengthen and modernise teacher education nationwide.
What is ITEP?
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is a four-year holistic undergraduate dual-major degree that blends academic subjects with professional education. It equips students with in-depth disciplinary knowledge and teaching expertise in a holistic manner
ITEP offers three dual-degree options:
- B.A. B.Ed. – Arts & Education
- B.Sc. B.Ed. – Science & Education
- B.Com. B.Ed. – Commerce & Education
Grounded in a multidisciplinary vision, the programme prepares future teachers for all four stages of schooling under NEP 2020’s 5+3+3+4 structure: Foundational, Preparatory, Middle, and Secondary. Students earn a double major, opening multiple academic and professional pathways.
