The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is a premier research and education institute in India, specialising in the mathematical sciences. The research groups in Mathematics and Computer Science at CMI are among the best known in the country. Recently, a research group has also been set up in Physics. The institute occupies a unique position in Indian academia, attracting substantial funding from both corporate and government sources.

History and Background

  • CMI began as the School of Mathematics, as a part of the SPIC Science Foundation, in 1989. 
  • In 1996, it became an independent and in 1998, in order to better reflect the emerging role of the institute, it was renamed the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI).
  • In October, 2005, CMI moved to its new campus at Siruseri, on the southern outskirts of Chennai.

CMI offers the following six-semester courses leading to BSc (Honours) degrees.

Admissions Process

The students who study at CMI are among the brightest in the country. Selection is through a national entrance examination. Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics and Physics conducted by HBSCE and the Indian Computing Olympiad conducted by IARCS may be exempted from writing the entrance examination at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

The entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Mathematics, featuring both objective questions and longer problems, based mostly on material up to the 12th standard. You may refer to past papers and exam syllabus here.

Important Dates 

  • The entrance exam for 2026–27 admissions will be held on Saturday, 2 May, 2026 at 14:00.
  • Applications for 2026–27 admissions will open around 1 March, 2026. Further details will be announced by February, 2026.

Fees and Scholarships

  • Tuition Fees- Rs 1,25,000/- per semester (There are 2 semesters in a year) 
  • Hostel and Mess Fees- Rs 31,000/- per semester 
  • Scholarship: Full waiver of the tuition fees and a monthly fellowship of Rs. 5,000 (Only 35 per year available)
