CEEB Codes and the Common App: A Counselor’s Guide

Last Updated on 6 March 2026
The Common App, also known as the Common Application, is a centralised online platform used by over 1100 colleges and universities worldwide.

It enables students to apply to multiple institutions using a single application while allowing counselors to submit essential school documentation (including transcripts, school reports, and recommendations) within one system.

Introduction

Each year, the Common App launches a new application cycle on August 1, at which point updated college requirements, deadlines, and institutional information become available. A counselor’s role is critical in ensuring that student applications are accurately matched to their school’s records from the very beginning; this is where CEEB codes play an important role.

What Is a CEEB Code

A CEEB (College Entrance Examination Board) code is a unique identifier assigned to secondary schools by the College Board. In the Common App ecosystem, this code helps colleges correctly associate:

  • A student’s application
  • The counselor’s school report
  • Official transcripts
  • The school profile

An incorrect or missing CEEB code can lead to delays, misfiled documents, or follow-up requests from admissions offices. While students technically select their school in the application, counselors are often the first to identify and resolve CEEB-related issues.

Where CEEB Codes Appear in the Common App Workflow

CEEB codes most commonly surface when students complete the Education and then enter their Current or Most Recent School section of the Common App. Counselors may encounter issues when:

  • A student cannot find the school in the search results
  • Multiple schools share similar or identical names
  • A student selects the wrong campus or branch
  • The school is new, international, homeschool-based, or alternative

Understanding this workflow allows counselors to guide students and prevent mismatches later in the application process.

How Counselors Should Advise Students to Enter a CEEB Code

Counselors should advise students to follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Common App.
  2. Navigate to the Education section.
  3. Select Current or Most Recent School.
  4. Begin typing the official name of the high school in the search box.
  5. The Common App will automatically match the school to its CEEB code.
  6. The student selects the correct school from the dropdown list.

Once selected, the CEEB code is populated automatically. Students generally should not type the code manually unless advised to do so.

If a Student Already Knows the CEEB Code

  • The student may type or paste the CEEB code directly into the school search field.
  • If the code is valid, the corresponding school will appear.
  • The student should select the school to ensure accurate matching.

This approach can be useful when schools have common names or multiple listings.

Advising Students Whose Schools Do Not Have a CEEB Code

It is not uncommon for a school to lack a CEEB code, particularly in the case of international schools, homeschools, online programs, or newly established institutions.

Counselors should advise students to:

  1. Select “I can’t find my school.”
  2. Choose the appropriate option:
    • My school does not have a CEEB code, or
    • My school is not listed
  3. Enter the school details manually.

The Common App will internally manage the absence of a CEEB code, and colleges will still be able to review the application without penalty.

Where Counselors Can Verify a School’s CEEB Code

If verification is needed, counselors can consult:

  • School records or the registrar’s office
  • The official school profile
  • The College Board’s school code database

Ensuring consistency between the school name, location, and documentation helps avoid downstream issues.

What Do CEEB Codes Mean for Students?

CEEB codes (College Entrance Examination Board) are 4- to 6-digit unique identifiers assigned by the College Board to high schools, colleges, and scholarship programs. These codes are a simple administrative part of the overall college application process.

Key Uses for Students:

  • Standardised Tests: When registering for the SAT or ACT, students use their high school’s CEEB code to ensure their school receives their scores.
  • College Applications: On platforms like the Common App, inputting the correct high school CEEB code helps colleges verify academic context and records.
  • Score Reporting: Students use 4-digit CEEB codes to identify specific colleges when sending official score reports.

Conclusion

CEEB codes play an important role in ensuring accurate school identification within the Common App, but they should be viewed as an administrative tool, not a gatekeeper to college access. A missing CEEB code does not disadvantage a student’s application. Accurate documentation, clear context, and counselor communication remain far more important than the presence of a numeric identifier.

At the start of each application cycle, take time to:

  • Verify your school’s official listing and CEEB status
  • Communicate clear instructions to students about selecting their school in the Common App
  • Include a comprehensive school profile that accurately represents your institution
