The Advanced Placement (AP) Program, offered by the College Board, allows high school students to take college-level courses and exams while still in school. AP scores can demonstrate subject knowledge to universities and, depending on the institution, may be used for college credit, advanced placement or both.
For students in India, AP Exams are available through schools and authorised AP test centres. The 2027 AP Exams will be administered from May 3–14, 2027, with late testing scheduled for May 17–21.
What are AP Exams?
The Advanced Placement Program is an academic programme developed by the College Board that enables high school students to study college-level subjects and demonstrate their knowledge through AP Exams.
Are AP exams mandatory?
AP Exams are not mandatory for university admission. Students following the IBDP, A-levels, CBSE or other recognised school curricula do not need to take AP Exams simply to demonstrate academic rigour.
However, AP Exams can be useful for students who want to demonstrate additional subject-level preparation, meet specific university requirements or potentially earn college credit. Whether an AP Exam is worth taking therefore depends on the student’s academic profile, university choices and intended course of study.

AP Exam schedule for 2027
The 2027 AP Exams will be administered over two weeks: May 3–7 and May 10–14, 2027. Students must take their exams at the date and time assigned by their school or authorised test centre.

Who can take AP Exams in India?
Students in India can take AP Exams if they meet the College Board’s eligibility requirements. You do not necessarily need to attend a school that offers AP courses to take an AP Exam.
A few schools in India offer AP courses and exams only to their own students. Students whose schools do not offer the AP Exam they want can register through an authorised AP test centre, provided the centre offers that particular exam. Test centres determine which exams they offer and set their own registration deadlines, fees and policies.
While there’s no strict age or grade level requirement to take an AP exam, it’s generally recommended for 11th and 12th-grade students.
You may retake an AP Exam in a subsequent year, but you cannot take the same AP Exam more than once during the same exam year. There are also subject-specific restrictions. For example, students cannot take both AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC in the same year.
How do you register for AP Exams in India?
If your school is an authorised AP test centre, speak to your school’s AP coordinator about registration.
If your school does not offer the AP Exam you want, you can register through an authorised AP test centre in India. The College Board states that students registering at authorised test centres should complete registration and payment directly with the centre. Each centre decides which AP Exams it offers and sets its own registration deadlines and fees.
For students registering through a test centre, the process generally involves:
- Find an authorised AP test centre that offers your chosen exam.
- Check the centre’s registration deadline and requirements.
- Follow the centre’s instructions to register and pay.
- Complete the required “Exam Only” enrolment through My AP, where applicable.
- Confirm the exam date, reporting time, location and device requirements with the test centre.

How much do AP Exams cost in India?
The standard AP Exam fee is $129 per exam for schools outside the U.S., U.S. territories and Canada. Moreover, a $37 fee reduction for qualifying low-income students outside the U.S.; eligibility requirements apply.
Are AP Exams digital or hybrid?
AP Exams are administered digitally, either as fully digital or hybrid digital exams through the Bluebook app.
Fully digital AP Exams
For fully digital exams, students complete both multiple-choice and free-response questions in Bluebook. Responses are submitted digitally at the end of the exam.

Some of these courses, including AP Computer Science Principles and AP Seminar, also require students to submit work through the AP Digital Portfolio. For the world language and culture exams, students will also complete a project before exam day that prepares them for two speaking free-response questions.
Hybrid digital AP Exams
For hybrid digital exams, students complete the multiple-choice questions and view the free-response questions in Bluebook, but handwrite their free-response answers in paper booklets.

What should students know about Bluebook?
Students taking digital AP Exams should become familiar with Bluebook before exam day. College Board recommends downloading the Bluebook testing app and using its test previews to practise with the digital testing environment.
Do universities accept AP scores?
Many universities around the world recognise AP scores, but how they use them varies by institution and programme. Depending on the university, AP scores may be considered for:
