Introduction
The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is a premier research and education institute in India, specialising in the mathematical sciences. The research groups in Mathematics and Computer Science at CMI are among the best known in the country. Recently, a research group has also been set up in Physics. The institute occupies a unique position in Indian academia, attracting substantial funding from both corporate and government sources.
Here is the history and background of CMI at a glance:
- CMI began as the School of Mathematics, as a part of the SPIC Science Foundation, in 1989.
- In 1996, it became an independent and in 1998, in order to better reflect the emerging role of the institute, it was renamed the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI).
- In October, 2005, CMI moved to its new campus at Siruseri, on the southern outskirts of Chennai.
Academic Programmes
CMI offers the following eight semester courses leading to BS (Honours) degrees.
- BS (Honours) in Mathematics
- BS (Honours) in Mathematics and Computer Science
- BS (Honours) in Mathematics and Physics
Admissions Process
The students who study at CMI are among the brightest in the country. Selection is through a national entrance examination. Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics and Physics conducted by HBSCE and the Indian Computing Olympiad conducted by IARCS may be exempted from writing the entrance examination at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.
The entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Mathematics, featuring both objective questions and longer problems, based mostly on material up to the 12th standard. You may refer to past papers and exam syllabus here.
About CMI entrance exam for BS (Honours):
The BS entrance exam will continue to have the same general pattern as in previous years. Note the following specific points.
- Part A will have questions with short answers that will be entered into the computer in specified format. Credit will be given based only on the correctness of the final answer. Note that some of these questions may be designed to assess your ability to comprehend and complete mathematical reasoning and to give justification.
- Part B will have about 5 to 7 problems requiring written solutions which may be longer. For all the problems in this part, complete justification of all steps of your solution is required. Credit will be given based only on the correctness of your mathematical reasoning.
