Introduction to the NEET (UG) Exam

NEET (UG) is one of the toughest medical entrance examinations conducted in India. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission in each of the disciplines i.e. BAMS, BUMS, and BSMS courses of the Indian System of Medicine in all Medical Institutions governed under the Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020.

Programmes offered through NEET exam

NEET UG is the entrance exam for several medical and paramedical programmes:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)
  • Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
  • Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS)
  • Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS)
  • Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS)
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc. nursing: Military Nursing Service aspirants seeking admission to B.Sc. Nursing Courses being conducted at Armed Forces Medical Service Hospitals are required to qualify for NEET)

Candidates can pursue a career in the medical field without qualifying for the NEET exam too. Check the list of courses without NEET below:

  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT)

NEET Eligibility: 

Pass 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized board with:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology/Biotechnology
  • English as a core subject

Minimum marks:

  • General: 50%
  • SC/ST/OBC: 40%
  • PwD: 45%

NEET UG 2026 Important Dates (Tentative): 

  • NEET Application Form Release and Exam Date Announcement: February 2026 
  • Application Form Last Date: March 2026 
  • Display of Admit Card: April 2026 
  • Exam Date: May 2026 
  • Result Decalaration: June 2026
  • Counseling Process: July 2026 (Usually lasts 3-4 months)

As per 2025 data, 2,209,318 appeared for the NEET exam, out of which a total of 12,36,531 candidates qualified. 

Application Fee:

  • General: INR 1700
  • OBC/EWS: INR 1600
  • SC/ST/PwD: INR 1000

NEET Counseling: 

NEET counselling is the next step that comes after clearing the exam. Candidates will get admitted to Medical colleges any place in India through NEET counselling. On the basis of the All India Rank of the candidate and their choice of college, the seats will be allocated.

  1. Information for online counselling would only be available on the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) website (www.mcc.nic.in). 
  2. Applicants must provide a non-refundable registration fee and a refundable tuition fee.
