# If a student has one year to strengthen their profile, what should they do, and can any extracurricular activity guarantee admission to a top UK university?

No extracurricular activity can guarantee admission. Students should use the year to strengthen their academic preparation and build evidence of their interest in the intended subject. For UK applications, this is particularly relevant to the three questions in the UCAS personal statement demonstrating genuine interest through wider reading, lectures, podcasts, subject-related research or exploration of questions beyond the school syllabus. Draw on relevant school topics, essays, projects, competitions and other academic work to demonstrate subject knowledge, analytical ability and intellectual rigour. Discuss relevant projects, volunteering, work experience, online courses or other activities, explaining what you learned and how the experience prepared you for the course.
Students should focus on the quality of their engagement, what they learned and how they can demonstrate independent thinking, rather than collecting certificates or participating in activities solely to strengthen their applications.
