Introduction

If you love mathematics and enjoy problems that make you think rather than just calculate, there’s a nationwide competition happening right now that’s worth your attention.

Registration for the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) 2026 is now open until 25 July 2026. IOQM is the first stage of India’s five-level Mathematical Olympiad programme, which culminates in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). India has consistently performed well at the IMO, winning 3 Gold, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze medal in 2025.

What Is the Indian Mathematics Olympiad Programme?

It’s a talent-search and training programme run by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM). Its goal is to find students who are genuinely good at mathematical thinking, not just memorising formulas, and train them, eventually selecting India’s team for the IMO.

Unlike school examinations, IOQM does not follow the CBSE, ICSE, IB, or Cambridge syllabus. Instead, it tests mathematical reasoning through problems in Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, and Combinatorics.

You can register either through your school (if it is a registered examination centre) or individually online. Avoid waiting until the last few days, as the registration portal may become slower closer to the deadline.

Registration Options
  • Centre registration (schools registering as examination centres): Closed on 26 June 2026
  • Student enrolment through a registered centre: Open until 25 July 2026
  • Individual online student registration: Open until 25 July 2026

What this means for you: If your school is already a registered examination centre, you can still enroll through it. If it isn’t, you can register individually online and choose an available examination centre near you, subject to seat availability.

The format changes in later stages of the Mathematics Olympiad programme. For example, RMO and INMO are primarily descriptive, proof-based examinations where students are expected to write complete mathematical solutions rather than submit objective or integer-type answers.

The Five Stages Explained
  1. Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM)
  • Your entry point. A three-hour offline examination that tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving. It is the only stage with a registration fee.

  1. Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)
  • Date: November 15, 2026. Here, things shift—instead of picking answers, you write full proofs. Six questions in three hours. This is where showing your reasoning starts to matter more than getting the right answer

  1. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)
  • Date: January 17, 2027. One of India’s toughest school-level mathematics examinations. Only a small number of RMO qualifiers make it here.

  1. Training Camps
  • INMO qualifiers attend intensive HBCSE training camps, where they learn from experienced mathematicians, solve advanced problems, and take selection tests to determine India’s final team for the IMO. The final team of six students then undergoes a short Pre-Departure Camp (PDC) before representing India at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

  1. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
  • Date: July 2027 in Hungary (more details to be announced). This is the final destination. India sends up to six students to compete against the world’s best young mathematicians over two days of problem-solving.

Note: Students who qualify for later stages are informed by the organisers and are required to complete the necessary registration formalities. No additional registration fee is charged for the subsequent stages.

Why Consider IOQM?
  • Skill-building: Proof-writing, pattern recognition, and problem-solving that helps in engineering, CS, economics, and research.
  • College applications: Several leading institutions now recognise strong Olympiad performance. For example, IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Bombay offer admission pathways linked to Mathematics Olympiad achievements, while institutes such as ISI and CMI have long valued Olympiad excellence.
  • It’s fully funded: Beyond IOQM, students do not pay registration fees for subsequent stages. Training camps and international participation for selected students are supported by the organisers.
  • It’s just genuinely fun if you like hard problems. Many alumni say the friendships and mentorship matter as much as the medals.
How to Prepare
  • Build strong fundamentals in Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, and Combinatorics. Remember, IOQM tests mathematical reasoning rather than rote learning, and Calculus and Statistics are not part of the syllabus.
  • Solve previous years’ IOQM, RMO, and INMO papers to become familiar with Olympiad-style questions.
  • If you’re looking for additional practice, books such as Mathematical Olympiad Challenges by Titu Andreescu and Problem-Solving Strategies by Arthur Engel are popular among Olympiad aspirants.
  • Explore the official HBCSE syllabus and preparation resources for more guidance.
Conclusion

The Mathematics Olympiad pathway isn’t about being a “genius” but it’s about being curious enough to sit with a hard problem until it makes sense. Whether you end up representing India at the IMO or simply walk away from IOQM having learned to think differently about math, the experience is worth it.

If you’re eligible, register before 25 July 2026 and start your Olympiad journey today!
