India’s premier higher education institutions are expanding beyond the country’s borders. As part of the vision outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, leading Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are establishing overseas campuses to strengthen India’s global academic presence, promote research collaboration, and make world-class Indian education accessible to students around the world.
Note: This list reflects the status of IIT and IIM overseas campuses as of July 2026. Given the pace of announcements in this space (three new developments in the past 13 months alone) programme offerings, intake numbers, and campus statuses may change. Prospective students are encouraged to verify current details directly on the respective institutions’ official websites before making academic decisions.
- IIT Madras, Zanzibar (Tanzania): Established in 2023, IIT Madras Zanzibar became the first-ever international campus of an IIT. Located in Tanzania, it aims to serve students from Africa, India, and beyond while promoting research and innovation across the region. The campus currently offers two undergraduate programmes: BS in Chemical Process Engineering and BS in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, alongside select postgraduate programmes.
- IIT Delhi, Abu Dhabi (UAE) : IIT Delhi inaugurated its first international campus in Abu Dhabi in 2024, becoming the second overseas IIT campus. The campus offers four-year B.Tech. programmes that follow the same rigorous academic standards as the parent institute in India, with a strong emphasis on research, innovation, and industry collaboration. Undergraduate students can currently pursue B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Energy Engineering.
- IIM Ahmedabad, Dubai (UAE): IIM Ahmedabad opened its first overseas campus in Dubai in 2025, marking a significant milestone in the institute’s international expansion. Unlike the IIT campuses, the Dubai campus currently focuses exclusively on postgraduate and executive education. It offers the One-Year MBA, the General Management Programme, and other executive education courses. No undergraduate programmes are offered at present.
- IIM Bangalore, Malang (Indonesia): In July 2026, IIM Bangalore announced plans to establish its first international campus in Malang, Indonesia, making it the second IIM to expand overseas. The campus will be launched in phases, beginning with executive education programmes for working professionals before introducing degree-granting management programmes. No undergraduate programmes have been announced yet.
- IIT Bombay (United States): In June 2026, IIT Bombay signed a Letter of Intent with SUNY Old Westbury to jointly develop academic programmes and research initiatives in science and engineering. Unlike the other entries on this list, this is structured as a sub-campus partnership hosted within SUNY Old Westbury’s Long Island campus, not an independent, IIT-owned overseas campus. Certificate courses are expected to begin in 2027, with degree programmes to follow.
Why Does This Matter?
Overseas campuses help Indian institutions reach international students, strengthen global research and industry collaborations, and enhance the worldwide recognition of Indian higher education. They also reflect India’s growing ambition to become a global knowledge hub while creating new opportunities for students, faculty, and researchers across continents.
Conclusion
Although still in its early stages, the international expansion of IITs and IIMs marks an important step in the globalisation of Indian higher education. These campuses are helping Indian institutions reach new student populations, strengthen international research and industry partnerships, and enhance the global reputation of Indian education. As more institutions explore overseas campuses, students may soon have greater opportunities to earn an Indian degree while studying abroad.
