What is UCAS Extra?

UCAS Extra is a free service that gives you another chance to apply for university courses if you’ve used all five of your UCAS choices and aren’t holding any offers, either because you didn’t receive any, or because you declined them. It runs from 26 February to 1 July 2026, bridging the gap between the main application deadline and Clearing, so you don’t have to wait until results day to secure your place.

Note: If you did not use all your choices in your initial application, you don’t need to use Extra, you can just sign in to your application and add another choice, as long as it’s before 30 June, and you’ve not accepted or declined any offers.

How Does It Work?

Through UCAS Hub, eligible students will see an “Add an Extra choice” button under the Choices section. Use the ‘Show courses with vacancies’ filter in the UCAS search tool to find eligible courses, then contact the university directly to confirm they’ll consider your application and ask about any additional requirements (interviews, portfolios).

You can only apply to one course at a time, so research carefully before you apply. Universities have 21 days to respond — but if you haven’t heard back, you can choose to wait or withdraw and apply to a different course. Don’t assume silence means rejection.

Key Things to Know Before You Apply
  1. Don’t just rely on the UCAS website to check course availability. Reach out directly to the university too. Confirm they’re accepting Extra applications and ask about any additional requirements (interviews, portfolios).
  2. UCAS Extra does not allow you to submit a new personal statement through the system. If you’re applying for a different subject, check with the university directly about whether they need an additional statement and how to submit it.
  3. Once you add an Extra choice, you cannot reverse this to go back to your original five choices. Make sure you’re ready before you hit submit.
Key Dates 2026
  • 26th February : UCAS Extra Opens
  • 1st July : Last day to apply via Extra
  • 2nd July : UCAS Clearing Opens
Why Extra is Worth Considering
  • More chances, more flexibility. Especially valuable for students who applied to highly competitive courses like Medicine or Law and didn’t get in.
  • Time to rethink. If your interests or priorities have shifted since January, Extra gives you breathing room to redirect.
  • A real offer, not just a clearing call. Extra applications go through a proper review process, and universities give them genuine consideration.
What Students Must Understand
  • No insurance choice. Unlike your original application, if you accept an Extra offer, that’s it,  you’re committed. There’s no backup!
  • Declined offers don’t come back. If you turned down original offers to use Extra and it doesn’t work out, those offers are gone.
  • You can’t go back to your original five. Once you submit an Extra choice, your original five choices are no longer accessible.
  • Deadlines may differ. Response timelines and acceptance deadlines in Extra can be different from the standard cycle. Read every email from UCAS and universities carefully.
Conclusion

Extra is not the time to rush, you have until 1 July, so use that window wisely. Before you add a choice, take time to explore course pages and subject areas, compare options carefully, attend any applicant events or open days, and speak directly to admissions teams if you have questions.

And if Extra doesn’t result in an offer, don’t lose heart. Clearing opens 2 July with hundreds of courses across the country. All the best!
