With 9,199 Indian students studying in Malaysia as of 1 January 2025 (Source: MEA), the country is gaining popularity due to its highly ranked universities, affordable tuition fees, international branch campuses, and relatively low cost of living.

Why Malaysia Attracts Global Universities

Several factors explain Malaysia’s success in attracting prestigious foreign institutions:

  • Strategic location in Southeast Asia
  • English-medium instruction, making it accessible to international students
  • Lower operational and tuition costs compared to Western countries
  • Strong government support through initiatives such as EduCity, a dedicated education hub hosting multiple global campuses

Malaysia has therefore established itself as a major education hub, hosting several International Branch Campuses (IBCs) that offer degrees identical to those at their home institutions, often at a significantly lower cost.

United Kingdom

  1. University of Nottingham Malaysia (Semenyih, Selangor): Established in 2000, it was the first branch campus of a British university in Malaysia. The student profile reflects Nottingham’s global reputation, with more than 5,000 international students enriching campus diversity.
